rahm’s budget

i read in an article by WBEZ that one of the alderman has reservations about passing the budget because it eliminates a $75 tax rebate for trash removal at condos.

today has the potential to really suck due to the layoffs. we will definitely lose three staff members - two clerks and a page. everyone, apart from our children’s librarian, is resigned to what is going to happen. our children’s librarian may be moved to a different branch along with our branch manager (though he wouldn’t go without a huge struggle). losing staff sucks but the idea of people being shifted around is bad as well. full time staff is probably going to have to work 6 days a week with monday and friday being two half days.

we have had a while to prepare for this. when rahm first took office we heard he said “all i care about as far as the library is concerned is that the lights are on, the doors are open, and there is one person to check out books.”

there could be a lot more for me to say but i feel pretty drained on this topic and sometimes i feel guilty because my job is not in jeopardy. i also feel guilty because other crucial city services are being cut like mental health clinics and emergency response. i also know other cities are in the same position or worse. some of my friends have already been laid off from their jobs at libraries or other cultural institutions. our patrons have been fatigued by this issue as well.  all this kind of took the fight out of me before the fight even began.
